Working Together

For more than 250 years, Northampton County has been one of the larger and most economically important counties in Pennsylvania.  The county was established in 1752, primarily because of our strategic location at the confluence of the Delaware and Lehigh Rivers.
Historically, the first jobs in the Northampton County were basic labor – farmers, masons, loggers, tanners, and a hundred other specialties that provided goods and services to a growing community.  Later, the county became one of the most important terminals on Pennsylvania’s canal system, which brought anthracite coal and iron ore to the emerging iron industry and transported manufactured goods to customers throughout New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
Beginning about 1850, iron and steel production, and the production of Portland cement, made Northampton County one of the most important industrial centers in America.  The challenge today is to foster economic development and create a new prosperity for our local community, and at the same time we increase our participation in the global economy.
